As the brain child of singer Kevin Maloney, 9 Castle Close was formed in 2007 as a Celtic flavored rock project aimed at challenging the idea of what traditional music has become. After pulling together 5 diverse and creative personalities, Kevin realized he'd started something that went far beyond that.
The band melds the varied styles of rock, punk, funk and fusion with the deep history and tradition of Irish music. What results is music that is both uniquely enjoyable and refreshingly entertaining.
While new to the Dayton/Cincinnati music scene, the members of 9 Castle Close are no novices to stage performance. Each member brings their own personality, along with years of experience on their instrument and their music. Beyond his own two decades of guitar, banjo and bouzouki stage performance experience, Kevin has surrounded himself with musicians who are as dedicated and excited as he is. Patrick Disney (guitar/keys/) Todd Hale (bass) and Ryan Gross (Drums/Electronics) were founding members of the award winning Cincinnati-based rock band The Spill, and have now focused their creative talents to 9 Castle Close. Piper extraordinaire Larry Fortson (Highland pipes, Scottish shuttlepipes, and Irish whistles) has brought his decades of stage performance and competition experience into the fold. Besides playing with Celtic trad and rock bands in both the United Kingdom and the US, Larry has also won numerous piping competitions both countries.
9 Castle Close plays a Celtic music style ranging from progressive traditional, to driving Irish punk in the Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly styles, to the pop/folk/rock style of bands such as the Prodigals and Gaelic Storm, and original Celtic rock songs...with a style and sound of its own! Spend some time with these guys and you’ll be captivated by the passion they have for music. It's a musical experience you won't soon forget.
